The 4,400,000 cubic yards of concrete used in Hoover Dam and its adjoining structures would be sufficient to build a concrete walk four feet wide and two and three-quarters inches thick entirely around the earth at the equator! When full, Lake Mead holds enough water to cover all of New York State to a depth of one foot. Every two minutes and wenty seconds of each day and night, for 625 days, a giant bucket holding 16 tons of concrete was poured into Hoover Dam.

Lake Mead

Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA) offers a wealth of things to do and places to go year-round. Its huge lakes cater to boaters, swimmers, sunbathers and fishermen while its desert rewards hikers, wildlife photographers and roadside sightseers. Three of America's four desert ecosystems--the Mojave, the Great Basin, and the Sonoran Deserts--meet in Lake Mead NRA. As a result, this seemingly barren area conains a surprising variety of plants and animals, some of which may be found nowhere else in the world.

Dedicated in 1935, Valley of Fire is Nevada's oldest State Park. It is located only 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas. These features, which are the centerpiece of the park's attractions, often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays.
