Big Bend National Park

Texas

Big Bend National Park is one of the largest of America’s national parks. It consists of 801,000 with elevations of less than 2,000 feet along the Rio Grande to nearly 8,000 feet in the Chisos Mountains.

The park is a land of contrasts and moods. The lofty mile-high green island of the Chisos Mountains creates a sense of solitude. The narrow ribbon of the Rio Grande threads its way through this mountainous region. A teeming green oasis of its own, the river seems quite apart from the arid, fragile Chihuahuan Desert that surrounds and dominates much of the land.

Here you will find huge canyons, vast desert expanses, and the entire Chisos Mountain range.

Big Bend National Park also marks the northernmost range of many plants and animals, such as the Mexican long-nosed bat.
