Devils Tower rises nearly vertical 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River. Devils Tower was once hidden below the earth's surface, erosion has stripped away the softer rock layers revealing what we see now and call Devils Tower.

Millions of years ago m lava forced its way up under the earth's surface and gradually cooled. As time passed, erosion removed the overlying rocks, exposing the fluted columns of the tower. Early-day Indians held it in considerable awe and called it Mateo Tepee, "Bear Lodge." Because of its uniqueness and beauty, in 1906 Devil's Tower was proclaimed the first national monument.

The northern plains tribes called Devils Tower Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site of worship for many American Indians.

Here you will find pine forests, deciduous woodlands, and prairie grasslands. Deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife are abundant.
