Lake
Tahoe
Hemmed in by the majestic,
rock, tree-studded alpine mountains of the rugged Sierra Nevada, Lake
Tahoe at a 6,223-foot altitude is among the world's most remarkable
fresh-water lakes. Three score delightfully cool snow-fed streams flow
into the oval-shaped basin, annually replenishing and renewing the crystal-cool
waters of this "lake in the sky." Little wonder, then, that
for decades on end various artists, poets, writers, and journalists
have praised Lake Tahoe's versatile beauty and secluded charm.
From towering snowy peaks on
every side of this 22-mile-long by 12-mile wide lake, bold granite masses
and thickly studded evergreen forests gradually descend toward the deep-blue
waters, blending abruptly with flat, grassy meadows which recede from
the vast sandy stretches of shoreline.
