of Liberty - The Story Behind the Scenery by Paul Weinbaum
Paul Weinbaum, career professional with
the National Park Service, is active in preserving and interpreting
our culture and historic resources. He received his doctorate in history
from the University of Rochester. As the former curator of the Statue
of Liberty National Monument, Paul is extremely knowledgeable about
the statue and has a sensitive appreciation for the special significance
that this great symbol has for people the world over.
"The Statue of Liberty, that uniquely
American symbol that stands in lonely grandeur within New York harbor.
Since her dedication in 1886 she has seen the New York skyline which
once she dwarfed, take on a totally new character, its silhouetted canyons
of seel and sone visible for miles. She has seen world wars fought and
won, new philosophiesof brotherhood emerge, and a self-isolating, individualistic
nation change into a democratic world power abounding border to border
in productivity, technology, prosperity, and wealth, the likes of which
the world has never seen before."
